From September 2025 through September 2026, I’m celebrating 20 years of making music as Sir Giant. It all started back in 2005, and I can say it literally changed my life. It changed the way I looked at music, and pursuing a professional music career was not only possible, but easier than I thought (“easiER,” not “easy”).
A lot has happened since then, from having my moment of semi-fame in my home country Portugal, to completely feeling I couldn’t stay there anymore. From deciding I was done with Sir Giant and focusing solely on my electronic music projects, to deciding that I can do everything (you can read a more detailed story on Sir Giant here). After all, Sir Giant is like my little baby, where my new professional career as a musician started. I love the old songs, I know I have a lot to offer when it comes to those genres (reggae-rock, dub, ska), so why not invest my time and work into making more of that music? So, to celebrate the 20 years, I’m releasing a 5-song EP called “EP 25”.
Why a 5-song EP and why “EP 25”?
I wanted to “emulate” that moment in time. Same number of songs (5), similar name (“EP 05” was related to the year 2005, so it seemed appropriate to use “EP 25” to celebrate 20 years in 2025). But I wanted to take a step further: all songs are, one way or another, related to the songs I released in the “EP 05” CD. The structures, the chord progressions, the themes of the lyrics, even some of the titles in the new “EP 25” are connected to the “EP 05.” I will be sampling sections (or in some cases recording the same melodies or rhythms) from some of the “EP 05” songs and incorporating them into the “EP 25” songs. I will also create a cover artwork very similar to the one on the “EP 05.”
This has been a very interesting process, I gotta be honest. Revisiting those 5 songs, trying to recreate them using all the knowledge I’ve acquired over 20 years, is something that really excites me. I’m also curious to see what the people who already know my “EP 05” songs will think about the new songs.
